Acting as if international tournaments never happened, let's look at my 2020-21 Team of the Season over the entire world. This is entirely focused on their form throughout the season, which obviously means that the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Sergio Aguero, along with many others, will not compete even though they may or may not be better than certain inclusions. Basically, if I randomly selected you at any given point this season, you would be brilliant. I will be making use of a 4-2-2-2 formation, meaning I will use a keeper, a right and left back, two center backs, two pivots, a right and left midfielder and two center forwards.
Goalkeeper: Jan Oblak
Special mentions must go to Ederson and Manuel Neuer, but I simply could not look past the La Liga Player of the Season and Atletico's title-winning captain. Oblak is slightly old-fashioned and not the strongest with the ball at his feet, but a goalkeeper's job is ultimately to keep the ball out of the net and in this regard he has no equal.
Left Back: Alphonso Davies
Left and right backs were probably the hardest position, because there weren't really any who had a particularly brilliant season. There were no huge revelations or anything similar, so I just went for last year's breakout star, Alphonso Davies. He has carried his good form into this season and I think he deserves a spot here. Just to touch on Luke Shaw, yes he had a brilliant season compared to the last one, but that wasn't exactly hard and he definitely was nowhere near Davies' level.
Centre Back: Ruben Dias
While I do believe that Dias was not really a deserving recipient of the Player of the Season award, you cannot argue with the fact that he had an excellent season and is among the world's best center-backs (no, one good season cannot automatically make you the outright best, you need two or three). So Dias starts at center back.
Centre-Back: Milan Škriniar
While some players are more talented, you will struggle to find a more hardworking leader on the football pitch. Inter Milan would almost certainly not have reached the heights they did this season without someone so dependable and consistent at the back.
Right Back: João Cancelo
Right back is the weakest position on the pitch here, because, again, there was no-one who hugely exceeded expectations. I do think that Trent Alexander-Arnold is the best right back in the world, but he suffered with Liverpool's center back issues due to mounting defensive pressure that he was not used to. So Cancelo it is.
Pivot: N'golo Kanté
Not only was Kanté excellent in the Premier League, but he was probably the best player in the Champion's League as well. I think he will do quite well in the Ballon D'Or voting and being a nice guy doesn't hurt his case. He is the ideal DM, brilliant on and off the ball, tireless and hardworking, and he deservedly takes his spot in this eleven.
Pivot: Joshua Kimmich
Leon Goretzka is unlucky to miss out, but his midfield partner Joshua Kimmich becomes Bayern's second inclusion in our double-pivot. Kimmich is one of the most experienced 26-year-olds in the world, and his passing will come in useful as the team attempts to thread the ball through to their forwards.
Left Midfielder: Kylian Mbappe
There is definitely a spot for Ligue Un's Player of the Season, Kylian Mbappe. The young Parisian may not have won Ligue Un, but he was still extremely impressive and should slot in well out wide on the left. This does mean that players such as Salah, Son, Müller and his teammate Neymar will not find a place in the team, but this is neccesary, as his pace is something that this team slightly lacks.
Right Midfielder: Bruno Fernandes
Even if it is out of position, I could not have left Bruno Fernandes out. The Portuguese international has completely transformed Manchester United and his passing, like Kimmich's in a slightly deeper role, will be a huge help in this team. On occasion Mbappe would float forward, leaving him to take up his preferred role in the number 10 position.
Centre Forward: Harry Kane
While Spurs finished in seventh, Kane's performances did not drop one bit as he finished as top scorer and assister in the Premier League. Kane will probably play a lot as a sort of second-striker for the man up front, and he starts despite stiff competition.
Centre Forward: Robert Lewandowski
While at first glance you may think Wow, no Messi or Ronaldo! but it was actually Romelu Lukaku who I found it hardest to leave out, followed by those two and Luis Suarez. However, Lewandowski had to be in. This season, at 32, he broke the record for the most goals scored in a single Bundesliga season, scoring a massive 41 goals. The Polish international is also the highest-scoring foreign player in the Bundesliga, and holds countless other records too.
So there we have it! Comment who you would've picked down below in the comments and share my blog with your friends and family. Just as a matter of interest, 3 inclusions were from Bayern, 2 were from City and Atletico, Inter, Chelsea, PSG, United and Tottenham all had one inclusion, making it a pretty diverse team. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed and I will see you when next I post. Noah ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
