Harry Potter Defense Against the Dark Arts Teachers: Ranked

Welcome back! Sorry for the gap in posting, I had something going on. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this list! Just to be clear, this is ranked on importance to Harry's education, not the overall effect they had on his life. Hope you enjoy, and as always comment below if you have any thoughts, queries, etc.

7: Dolores Umbridge

She is the most despised character in the entire Harry Potter series. The pink-clad, toad-faced hypocrite is one of the only two teachers on this list who had absolutely no positive effect on the downfall of Voldemort. She was responsible for making it really easy for Voldemort to penetrate the ministry.
In fact, I would go as far as to suggest that she became a Death Eater during the events of the sixth book. She was the daughter of a Muggle woman and wizard janitor, despite what she later said. Just an overall horrible character, a smart invention by JK Rowling, but a character that many a Harry Potter fan would relish the chance to use the Cruciatus curse on.

6: Amycus Carrow
This despised bastard is only above Umbridge because of the lack of ambition. He is the last person on this list who helped Harry in no direct way, although he did push the DA back together. He loved to be bad, and would exchange power and riches for the simple chance to torture someone.

His effect may not have been as bad as those lower than him on the list, but as he NEVER taught and helped Harry with something he has to fall to sixth. I will now move on, as his cruelty and brutality always leave me with a bad taste in my mouth. Bleurgh.

5: Gilderoy Lockhart

Pathetic, powerless and pompous are all accurate descriptions of this fancied fraud. His lies and self-promotion are terrible, and it just shows you how sadly horrible most of Harry's DADA teachers were.
He may have charmed many people with his good looks, but when it comes to using a charm he is woefully hopeless. It is a general agreement with Harry Potter fans that his appointment taught more children how not to be than how to be, and this is not enough to put him anywhere higher than five.

4: Quirinus Quirrell
He was an instrument for Voldemort, but despite not deserving a top three spot, Quirrell did teach Harry some things, surely more than Lockhart did, and was part of teaching Harry his fighting mentality at the end of book 1.
An intelligent but easy-to-influence man, Quirrell met a sad end... or did he [that is a reference to my Top Five Harry Potter Theories (the first one), which you should check out (please)]. The turban-clad tyrant was the first pawn sacrificed by Voldemort in the metaphorical chess game that was the second wizarding war.

3: Barty Crouch Jr (Mad-Eye Moody)
Disguised as Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody, Barty is the famed criminal son of a high-up ministry employee, Barty Crouch Sr, who he later murdered. He is the most evil wizard on this list, but as we are focusing solely on what he taught to Harry and his friends BC Jr takes second.
He was clearly pretty intelligent, but his madness took over and he became one of Voldemort's most dangerous followers. I have a tendency to feel sorry for him and his family and feel his tale is a sadly neglected one which I may publish in a future blog post.

2: Remus Lupin
Standing head and shoulders above all previously mentioned teachers, the depressed and oppressed werewolf exposes what sad lives the DADA teachers at Hogwarts led. He may have got married at the end, living just long enough to see his child, but this does not make up for all the suffering and sorrow he went through.
Bitten by Fenrir Greyback at a very young age, Lupin was a close friend to James Potter, Sirius Black and the much-hated Peter Pettigrew. He married Nymphadora Tonks and birthed the first child that Harry raised, Teddy Lupin.

1: Severus Snape

Snape was the obvious choice here, as he taught Harry during every year of his Hogwarts career. Harry owes his potion-making, occlumency skills and major information near the end of the war to this brave and regretful man.

One of the greatest characters created by JK Rowling, Snape is one of the most human characters in Harry Potter. He goes down the wrong path - and pays the price - before becoming one of the most important pieces in the puzzle that was the defeat of Voldemort.

Welcome back! Sorry for the posting gap. Hope you're all well and please comment below with any queries or post requests. Please share this blog with all your friends and subscribe to help my blog grow. If I get to 500 overall views before the new year I'll do an extra-big new year's special. I will try to post 4-5 times a week, so watch out for anything new and yeah, see you next time. Noah ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Comments

  1. Amycus Carrow never really taught Harry. Harry was too busy looking for the Horcruczes( forgot how to spell that) and too busy trying to kill Voldy.
