Heroes of Olympus: Argo II Crew Ranked

In my opinion Rick Riordan's best ever series, the Heroes of Olympus is an 5-book thriller that is a signature Rick Riordan combination of myths, action and comedy. To be clear, I am only focusing on the 'official' Argo II crew, so no Coach Hedge, Nico di Angelo or Buford the Table.

Also this contains MAJOR SPOILERS for anyone who hasn't read Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, Magnus Chase or Trials of Apollo 1-4, as this is focused on the lives of the characters over the course of their entire lives, not just the amount of time covered by the series.

And finally, these rankings are based mostly on character, so as not to put less-used characters such as Hazel and Frank at a disadvantage compared to the most famous and used characters such as Percy or Annabeth. With that out of the way, let's do this.

7: Jason Grace

Jason Grace is definitely more of a 'least-liked' than a 'most-hated' character for me, but he was the by far the easiest to place. He's too Mr. Perfect, too polite, up to the point where it would be insulting if he was a real person. The way he died just makes it worse.

He's very necessary, and a smart inclusion from Rick Riordan. He is especially useful for highlighting how Percy is both powerful and humorous and yet flawed. He is a brilliant part of the series, but as a character is both boring and like what the gods should be, and I wouldn't be surprised if some twist that involved his death came up in the final Trials of Apollo book, especially involving its circumstances, such as the subtle presence of the Big Three's powers...

6: Piper McLean
One of the hardest members to place, it was difficult to separate 5 and 6, but I ultimately chose to place Piper in sixth, just higher than her (at least at one point) boyfriend, despite being a living impersonation of the famous meme below. However, it had to be done.
The reason she relates to the meme is because she hates the idea of women trying to look good for men and to possess independence, and yet she is the daughter of the goddess of love and beauty, and therefore rather pretty, and has a boyfriend who she is very attached to, and I will gladly argue against anyone who would like to challenge me on that last point in the comment section below.

5: Hazel Levesque

I originally intended for Hazel to be placed at six, but her intriguing backstory eventually won out, as I believe it to be the best ever created, despite the similarities to her half-brother Nico's. Her link to Leo Valdez is hilarious, and the fact that a sweet, young girl is the daughter of the God of the Afterlife, master to Death himself is pretty cool.
She is, depending on how you see it, the youngest by a few years or oldest by a few decades, on the quest. Both loveable and powerful, she is the first of the five on this list who seem to have had a (relatively) happy ending so far...

4: Frank Zhang

Unlike Jason, Frank is like a teddy bear (which he is often compared to and can turn in to) because he makes you feel good. Clumsy and pudgy at first glance, he eventually evolves into the selfless hero we all know and love. He is a replica of the Ugly Duckling story, and it is nice and heartwarming to follow his growth from pudgy adolescent to (still nice) six-packed hero.
He also has (in my opinion) the most epic powers of the lot, and with a bit more self-confidence he could be the most powerful mortal in Rick's Universe (einherjar not included). However, it is this self-doubt that makes him our relatable and selfless Frank. As you can tell, I hate to put him this low on the list, and he was definitely pushing top three.

3: Annabeth Chase

One of the OG members, Annabeth is the second most well known and important member of Rick Riordan's Universe. Annabeth is the smart one in this group of mismatched adolescents, and it is for this reason that she is the brains behind the scenes in most of the group's plans, and can think her way out of any situation, a trait that is portrayed when she makes Arachne, her greatest fear, weave her own deathtrap.

However, she is not all brains, and has an excellent amount of resourcefulness and a natural talent when it comes to combat, a skill she only honed to near-perfection during her 11 years spent with camp half-blood as her home. She can do what most people can do with a crate of explosives with a tube of toothpaste and a box of matches, and could kill you faster with a needle than I could with a bazooka (although I do admittedly set a rather low bar).

2: Leo Valdez

This skinny and hilarious Latino boy has more than just the trademark cheeky smile, and has the only brain anywhere near that of Annabeth's out of the seven. He may have been the seventh wheel on the ship, but the joker always kept a brilliant attitude and could crack a smile on the face of even the most Vita-Mixed and Tartarus-Sentenced Kronos.

A talented mechanic, Leo was the one who granted Calypso her wish of being free after winning her heart in book 4 on the beach of O-gee-gee-ah. If this list was based on Heroes of Olympus and/or Trials of Apollo alone, then Leo would probably take top spot, but because of the conditions mentioned in the intro...

1: Percy Jackson

The son of Poseidon himself, Percy is the only person so far to be the main character over 1 time, as he has played the main role 1 1/7 times. The sea-loving city boy battled in the First Titan Revolution AND the Second Giant Revolution, and the charismatic Manhattanite is where it all started.

He, like Frank, is a normal dude who was lucky (or unlucky) enough to get cool powers. An all-round good guy, he suits Annabeth perfectly, differing from or being like her in all the necessary places, and is one of the only book's main characters who lets his 'Great Woman' stand beside him rather than behind him.
